the AI era

AI & stuff

I wanted to yap about AI, not only because it is genuinely impressive, but because I feel it really accurately represents how I feel about parts of the world in its current state.

These feelings are mostly along the lines of it is a superpower, we can probably solve giant logistical problems, create autonomous networks of capability, solve any problem with it, but typical of the world to use it for nefarious & controlling purposes.

Pretty much every industry has wound up having AI forcefully shoved down our necks, regardless of wanting or needing AI, we got AI. I will acknowledge that AI has fundamentally changed how most desk workers operate, it is a tool that enables more output from people, yet on the same side it has contributed to some of the most aggressive accelleration of global warming ever seen.

But this leaves us in a conundrum, if the AI tooling is so capable, yet so horrendously destructive to the world, what do you do about it?

What can you do… if you chose not to subscribe & walk the righteous path, does that choice have any tangible impact on whether or not an AI data centre gets built in your area?

It’s a very difficult question to answer, obviously I am on the side that chooses not to flog the worlds water supply to make slop clickbaity videos, but it is absurdly difficult to not use, or be part of the AI era.

So, I like many others, hopped on the bandwagon to learn how to do the AI things. I trained my local agent, learned about tuning models, building skills, using different harnesses, etc.

After a few weeks of making some slop, throwing a couple of make no mistakes prompts at the models, I ended up with some genuinely useful things that I use in my homelab.

But inevitably, I return back to the original question, how many lakes did I drain to make app go brr?

  ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

In my eyes, the models already exist, they will improve at an absurd rate, and the worlds health will continue to get flogged by megacorps & uncaring governments whether we like it or not.

So…

Use it yourself, try make something that benefits the world.

Use it to monitor your environmental pollution or reduce your carbon footprint. Use it to building an application that fights against cyber crime. Use it to learn how you can improve yourself.

The technology exists, it is insanely capable, and I reckon there’s a whole lot more good we can get from using AI, than the slop we’re used to seeing.
